                                                              FAQs

What height should pickups be for more bass? ›

Adjusting a pickup closer to a string will improve its bass response, while moving it further away diminishes the fundamental and bass response with it. Reducing the distance between the top of a pickup and the strings also increases the sensing strength of a pickup exponentially.

How do I know if my bass pickups are too high? ›

Setting your pickup height too high will cause your magnets to push and pull your strings out of tune. Here's a quick way to tell if this is happening to you: play the Low E string at a high fret (15th fret is a good one to start at). You might hear a “warbling” sound. That sound is your magnet fighting your string.

Where is the best bass pickup position? ›

                                                              Bass Pickup Summary

If you are buying your first bass, I would suggest getting a P-J pickup configuration. This means one humbucking P-bass (Precision bass) style pickup near the neck and one J-bass (Jazz bass) style pickup near the bridge.

Should slap bass pickups be neck or bridge? ›

Having the two pickups gives you greater variety with tones; you can go for the neck pickup to give you more of a Precision sound, whereas if you go for the bridge pickup, your sound get's a little more nasal and you end up with more of a Les Claypool of Primus tone.

What is the best action height for bass? ›

How high should the action be on a bass guitar? In an ideal situation, the distance between the top of the 12th fret and the bottom of the lowest-E string should be around 2.4 mm. On the other hand, the distance between the 12th fret and the 'G' string should be 2 mm.

How do I know if my pickups are too low? ›

The first and most obvious sign your guitar pickups are too low is weaker output. Maybe you lowered a high-output humbucker to get a jazzier clean tone. But that lower output also translates to a thinner, weaker sound.

How do you set bass pickups? ›

You can set the height of your bass pickups by tightening or loosening the screws around the outside of the pickup. Some brands of basses put foam underneath to push the pickups upward. If the foam is breaking down, you can put some springs under the pickup on the shaft of the screws to push them up instead.

Where do you finger pick bass? ›

On most bass guitars this should put your plucking fingers in a central position between the neck and the bridge. You should get a good, all-purpose tone from your bass in this area.

Is bass better with pick or fingers? ›

Truthfully, there is no right or wrong way to play a bass guitar. There isn't even a preferred way. Any method you use to get sound out of the thing—fingers, pick, thumb, those weird stick things Tony Levin uses, telekinesis, whatever—works just fine. It's purely a matter of personal preference.

How close should pickups be to bass strings? ›

                                                              As a starting point/rule-of-thumb sort of thing, though, I'd advise the following: Don't set humbuckers closer than 4/64” (1.6mm) Don't set Fender-type pickups closer than 6/64” (2.4mm) Don't set P-Bass closer than 6/64”(2.4mm) and J-Bass closer than 5/64” (2mm)

Are thicker strings better for slap bass? ›

                                                              Picking your gauge

Because heavier strings have more harmonics, tension is what keeps the tuning stable. Whereas lighter strings have a tighter sound and project more of a “bite.” Light gauges are also easier to bend and fret for playability. “Slappers” and “poppers” will generally use a lighter gauge bass string.

Is it worth upgrading bass pickups? ›

Upgrading your bass pickups not only addresses limitations in a modestly priced bass but also has the potential to propel your bass into a new realm of tonal possibilities.

How high should bass be? ›

Your bass setup is an essential aspect of your tone. That's why in this lesson, I'm going to share the process I use to get the ideal string height and intonation so you can rock on your next gig. Measuring from the top of the 12th fret, aim for 1mm- 2mm from the G string to the E string.

How high should I adjust my pickups for the best sound? ›

For standard, full-size humbuckers, a reasonable starting point for the bridge pickup is at least 1/16" (1.5mm) from the high E and 5/64" (2 mm) from the low E. There are no recommended distances for the other 4 strings.
